This training course raises awareness of the principles of ergonomics in order to reduce MSDs (musculoskeletal disorders) caused by repetitive movements, combined with excessive effort and awkward postures. In Luxembourg in 2020, MSDs affected 35% of workers who reported regular back pain or joint problems (21%), or both at the same time (14%) (QoW 2020 figures). Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) remain the most common work-related health problem in the EU (EU-OSHA).

What is the future for eco-friendly chemistry? Understanding and implementing the Principles of Green Chemistry and associated metrics toward biological chemistry

The training will cover the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry, enabling the development of eco-friendly processes for obtaining ingredients with a low environmental impact. The strategic importance of these Principles will be presented within the framework of respecting planetary boundaries, the United Nations Global Compact for the environment, and the key actions already implemented to protect our Planet. The main metrics associated with these Principles will be detailed in order to develop new processes or improve existing ones with a low environmental impact, with the goal of moving closer to biological chemistry. Finally, an overview of the implementation of these Principles will be presented, featuring academic and industrial examples and the consequences for product life cycles. This seminar will be led by Michel Philippe who, after completing a PhD at the Institut de Chimie des Substances Naturelles in Gif-sur-Yvette on new saccharide derivatives in the field of antibacterial compounds and immunostimulatory agents, worked for 36 years at L’Oréal as Head of Sustainable Innovation, and later as an Expert Advisor in eco-design, green chemistry, and naturalness. As an AFNOR/ISO member, he also participated in drafting the ISO 16128-1,2 standards on terminology and criteria for naturalness in cosmetics involving the principles of green chemistry.
