In Luxembourg, employers have a legal obligation to ensure the health and safety of their employees. This responsibility specifically involves training workers on the correct use of equipment provided at their workstation, ergonomic setup, and best practices to prevent musculoskeletal disorders and risks associated with sedentary work. This ergonomics training obligation stems directly from the application of the 9 general principles of prevention set out in the Labor Code.

Avoiding risks or reducing them to an acceptable level: Ergonomics training primarily aims to prevent risks from arising: pain, MSDs, eye strain, and physical or cognitive overload. By teaching employees how to position their bodies, adjust their furniture, or organize their space, employers eliminate many risks before they appear or allow them to be reduced. Adapting work to the individual: This is the very heart of ergonomics. Training allows for the customization of the workstation according to the physical capabilities, morphology, and specific constraints of each worker. It empowers employees to adapt their own environment.

Replacing what is dangerous with what is not, or is less so:

Effective training raises awareness of ergonomic alternatives: suitable accessories, sit-stand devices, and work organization software. It teaches how to choose the safest solutions.

Taking technical developments into account: Work tools are evolving: screens, ergonomic chairs, adjustable desks, and teleworking. Employers must update training so that employees master modern equipment and adopt new best practices. Planning prevention: Ergonomics training should not be a one-off event. It is part of a continuous plan: training upon hiring, periodic refreshers (recommended at least every 5 years), and updates during technical or organizational changes. Giving appropriate instructions to workers: Training constitutes the formal instruction required by law. It must be clear, concrete, adapted to the workstation, and immediately applicable to allow the employee to work safely.

The ergonomics training obligation is a central lever for applying the 9 principles of prevention. It ensures that every employee knows how to use their workstation correctly, prevents risks at the source, and allows the employer to fulfill their legal health and safety responsibilities.
